'cause you don't get the wordplay Smile the phrase 'jestem samochodem' can mean either 'I'm a car' or 'I'm driving'. That's why the truck can't have a beer. Besides, nobody forces you to look at every dumb internet pic Wink

Did you learn this version of history at school or working in the cornfield? And what does this have to do with the discussion? I wasn't writing on behalf of Poland, I was doing it on behalf of myself and only myslef. But wait... am I trying to explain it to a redneck? Sorry, waste of time... It's virtually impossible for me to reach someone at that level.

No, I haven't. Have you? I personally hope not to be forced to do it. Ever. I try to lower the probability of taking part in a conflict by voting. I do understand the notion of 'morale', maintaining which requires a certain amount of humour, but I believe there are better, more aware, ways of keeping high spirits. This here is none of what I would call 'good humour' and, as you can see, it instantly got turned into a rather weak 'demotivator' (some of them are really funny - not this one) by some narrow-minded 14-year-old, who does not even care about the troops' fate, but instead spends hours on the web trying to be 'funny'. Believe it or not, but language has immense power. Any social practice stems from discourse and is carried out with the use of it. Reading your post, I understand that you are not among the people whose standpoint would be significantly influenced by being bombarded by such 'jokes'. But there are such people and I mean hordes of them, you can be sure about it. I believe that less such discourse will result in less oppression and violence in the world. And it's not something I've taken out of the blue, it's what I've learned while studying to become a linguist. I do not want to start an argument of the 'Poland vs U.S.' kind - as I've mentioned, I have got nothing against you and your nation. And besides, I don't know how many such pictures have been taken by Polish troops in Iraq. I wanted to criticise this particular case and point out that I wish people would use language more consciously.

Do you mean I should not insult the bastard who wrote this oh-so-funny note, making fun of killing people in a war and generalising about the Iraqi, as if they were all on the 'wrong' side? As for the 'butt-saving' and 'returning favors' - firstly, I'm not talking about conflicts here, I'm talking about tasteless jokes. Secondly, Poland backed the U.S. up in Iraq, so why complain about one sceptical Polish pinkbike user. Thirdly, it was mainly the Brits who helped Poland in WW II. And ni, I haven't got a problem with America. I've got a problem with the reproduction of racist (and other discriminatory) discourses, that's about it.

It should be spelt "photos", not "photo's"... but maybe the proper use of his or her own language is too much of a challenge for an American trooper.

Cedric is a legend but the photographer deserves a standing ovation! I've recently taken a look at some of this years World Press Photo awarded shots and imho this one could make it into the 'sports' category hands down if it were a press release. The way it captures the crowd's emotion and Cedric's energy is so intense, plus the awesome colour play. My POD.
